Known chiefly for depicting the Twin Towers destroyed on September 11, 2001, so-called war rugs are often mistakenly assumed to glorify violence. In fact, they simply chronicle events.

The tradition reaches back further than that. The example offered here is a "victory rug" — a Victory over the Soviets rug — depicting the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan in 1989.

The weapons considered "new" at the time, and the way they are rendered, give this wool-knotted object an appearance that is at once curious and remarkable.
